Metrospiritual

subwayWhat is metrospiritual? It is the idea of living out one’s faith in the context of the city. For a long long time the church has by and large viewed life and especially Scripture with a rural bias or lens or filter. With the rapid pace of urbanization globally the question confronting followers of Jesus today is, “how do we live out our faith in the city? What does it look like?”

Far from the notion of intellectual assent, a metrospirituality embraces the city and see God’s hand in and plan for cities. It is waking up to idea of developing a theology of the city. At the core of a metrospirituality is caring for the city and desiring to see holistic community transformation. That could mean cleaning up a city park, starting an after school club for low-income children, planting a church among the marginalized or those who live in high-rent chic trendy lofts, or partnering with city officials, local business leaders, social workers, and spiritual leaders to work together to renew the city. This is the beginnings of what it means to be metrospiritual. We are running into the city together …
