The Book of Cities

“Cities are increasingly the focal points of human existence. People are coalescing around cities, which continue to evolve and change like living organisms.” (from The Book of Cities)

Last evening I made a late night run to Barnes and Noble. The family was asleep and there are not too many places open at 10:00 PM around here. I just needed to get out and look for a book. I am looking for a book called Meat Market which is about the inside scoop of college football recruiting. I’m a total geek for stuff like that.

Since they didn’t have the book I was looking for I just wandered through the store looking at all the books. I came across a book entitled The Book of Cities. Of course cities have held a strong fascination for me. I love new cities, walking through towering downtowns, and feeling the electricity of the never-ending life there. In this new book I picked up is an account of 250 cities around the globe. Two pages are dedicated to each city and while your most famous cities (New York, London, Paris, etc) obviously make the list there were a lot of peculariar ones as well. Cities like Ushuaia, Adelaide, Yangon, or Asmara are among the seemingly unknown cities detailed in the pages of the book. I was hooked so I bought it.

As I read over a few last night before bed I couldn’t help but wonder what it’d be like to live in each one. Some were spectacular cities while others were downright scary but in the end God’s heart is for the denizens of each. Something is happening globally that people are flocking to cities like never before in human history. What could God be saying to us?
